WILLEMSTAD – When talking about the Curacao Police Force, you should start at the beginning. And this means that you must start with the recruitment of police officers. Recruitment is the worst process in the Curacao Police Force. And this anyone can notice.
In the past, policemen where constantly observed with whom they met or walked in the streets with, to confirm if their behavior was correct, otherwise that candidate could not become a policeman. Mr. Jaime Córdoba of the “Pueblo Soberano” faction stated this yesterday morning. By the way, Mr. Córdoba is a former policeman.
He explained that in his time he went to police school for a year and always did his job with satisfaction. He saw how many people went to Apeldoorn in the Netherlands and returned without them becoming bosses. This was because they did not have a mentor to guide them. Thus, he thinks that the recruitment process for those interested in becoming police should be completely changed. In this system recruits must undergo a review process to determine the best possible candidates to become police officers. And what is currently being done is wrong and more criminality is inserted in the police force. A few days ago some police men where detained again because of involvement in illegal activities
Obviously during the recruitment process there may be mistakes, but this must be very minimal. Thus, according to Córdoba, a new police selection system must be introduced.
STUDY:
With respect to the study of becoming a police officer, the parliamentarian suggested that study that is given be based on what the police corps demands not based on what is stipulated by those who teach the study (professors). It is the police corps’ duty to determine what should be thought, and the professor’s job to make sure this is executed. Professors who teach at police schools have not been on the streets for such a long time that they are not aware anymore what is happening there.
They don’t even know that some gangs send their members to attend police schools.
The teachers that the police force needs, are the ones that know both the rules of the police force and what is going on in he streets, rather than just the theories. For this reason, Córdoba insists on changing the system drastically. According to Córdoba, another problem that the police school has is discipline. Apparently they do not have much discipline. In conclusion, the ‘police factory’ used to create well-educated and well-formed police officers.
