WILLEMSTAD.- Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath proposes a national pact. Curaçao is in crisis and the Government will asks Holland for more time. He proposed that together will all sectors with an ample base reach a direction with which can deal with this crisis.

The Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath said there is a need for a national consultation to reach a National Pact. This will give more a solid base for the petition to Prime Minister Rutte to grant Curaçao more space. The Government hopes that there is understanding for this.

This means that the measures will not be executed at this time. The Prime Minister said: “I think it is a matter of time to know how the measures will be implemented, waiting for the analysis of the Central Bank.” There are some measures in the apparatus itself that should be taken like subsidies, work more efficiently and there are certain services that the Government provides that are subsidized such as: the passport among others.

Regarding the increase of the OB, the Prime Minister said that this the big one and they want to see the synchronization of this, to take into account the impact and the trajectory of the tax system revision, for example to returning to the system of charging at the entrance. The Prime Minister told EXTRA that these are things they want to consult first. But just as the Finance Minister said: “Doing nothing is not an option”.

“We must deal with our deficit, but as he said in the Parliament, It is not realistic to take all these measures at the same time in our social and economic situation. Something must be done since as an autonomous country there must be responsibility and we must be willing to do what we have to do, to keep our finances under control, but this must happen within the framework of more years, according to the Prime Minister.”

The government wants to take is 4 to 5 years to reach a balanced budget etc, and does not want to take all the measures at the same time this year, because this can have a devastating impact on our economy and our people cannot carry it.

The Prime Minister told EXTRA that he thinks that our people are responsible and that we have professionals and sectors that understand and have also shown understanding for the Government’s challenges regarding their public finances. They must be taken in a measured and balanced way and also take them based on an in-depth analysis to make them come true.
