WILLEMSTAD – “We have come to Curaçao with great concern and we have left Curaçao with even greater concern.” This was what the president of the Institute of Financial Supervision (CFT) of Curaçao and St. Maarten Raymond Gradus declared yesterday. Gradus is disappointed that until now the Government of Curaçao has not reported enough answers and clarity regarding CFT’s concern. According to the most recent information, the preliminary deficit for 2017 is 113 million. According to the budget of this year, 48 million will be compensated through different economic measures.

The College asked the Government for a long time to generate more information about it and they still have not obtained it. Yesterday, Finance Minister Kenneth Gijsbertha was given no more than three weeks to answer the different questions. Gradus did not explain what could happen if Gijsbertha does not comply with this. Different journalists during the press conference asked Gradus if CFT would advise the Dutch government to give some instructions, but Gradus did not mention this option. He hopes that Curaçao will give relevant information in this regard.

At the same time, he explained that CFT would use most of the “instruments” that it can use according to the Law of the Council. The instructions could be one of the possible instruments, but Gradus did not want to mention the word. “It is more than clear that we are very worried, but I am convinced that supervision can contribute to achieve a budget without deficit.” Subsequently, CFT mentioned the importance of preparing and executing a balanced budget within the framework of economic growth. Investors value stable public finances, as it contributes to a reliable investment climate. In addition, making bonds under favorable conditions in the Netherlands is only possible if the budget is balanced, so Gradus explained at a press conference.
