Bogotá, Colombia

Colombian government social media accounts have removed videos of the new president walking between the bodies of people killed during attacks on guerrillas, in line with a recent court ruling.

Abelardo de la Espriella came to power on a pledge to crack down on Colombia’s myriad armed groups, many of which make huge profits from drug trafficking and illegal mining.

He sparked shock and fury after posting a video of him walking between shrouded, lifeless bodies after a series of military attacks on guerrilla camps, apparently intended as a show of strength.

A Bogota court on Tuesday ordered the government to temporarily hide the videos on its Meta accounts, stopping short of ordering “definitive deletion” while the judge makes a final decision.

De la Espriella, a 48-year-old millionaire, has overseen three deadly airstrikes on guerrillas since entering office in early August.

The operations killed at least 42 people, including six minors.

The US-backed president has posted videos set to dramatic music, which he always concludes by shouting, “Long live Christ the King!”

The posts featuring the lifeless bodies were met with disbelief across Colombia.

The national forensics authority called the recording a “violation of human dignity.”

The offending posts have been removed from the government’s official Meta platform accounts, but not from De la Espriella’s X profile.

The government should report on operations against guerrillas “without dwelling on the violence and cruelty,” Santiago Osorio, the lawmaker who filed the complaint, told AFP.

A separate court ruling earlier this month banned strikes on guerrilla camps in a previously targeted Amazonian region if intelligence indicated that minors were present.
