WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch Parliament yesterday approved a motion related to Curaçao. With this motion the Dutch Parliament wants to prevent Curaçao from being used for military actions without issuing a mandate governed by International Law.

The reason for doing this is that according to the Dutch Parliament ‘President Maduro has created a very large humanitarian emergency in Venezuela.’ In this motion it is written, that Curaçao will serve as a humanitarian collection center, for among others: food, medicine and water for the Venezuelan people. According to the motion, US President Donald Trump does not rule out the possibility of military intervention. The Dutch Parliament agrees that Curaçao is a humanitarian collection center, but wants to prevent the country from being used for military intervention. This, ‘in accordance with agreements with the Parliament of Curaçao’.

With this motion, the Dutch Parliament asks the Dutch Government not to hold any preparation for any possible military or any kind of intervention, but falls under the rules of International Law. Which means that in case the United Nations comes with a decision to carry out a military intervention in Venezuela with the support of many other countries, the situation will change.

The motion in the Dutch Parliament was delivered by the parliamentarian of D66 Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, next to the party D66 the motion was supported by SP, PdvA, Groenlinks, Partij voor de Dieren, Denk, 50Plus, CDA, and ChristenUnie. These are a total of 92 seats of the 150 of the ‘Tweede Kamer’. The VVD, PVV, SGP and Forum voor de Democratie parties did not support the motion. Which means that in the coalition there are differences of opinion between the parties D66, ChristenUnie and CDA on the one hand, and VVD on the other, regarding the possibility of a military intervention from Curaçao.
