LISBON (AP) – After a week of arduous efforts, the forest fire burning in southern Portugal is finally under control, authorities said on Friday.

About 1,400 firefighters and 450 support vehicles were still in place to prevent a resurgence of the flames, the Civil Protection Agency said.

The fire, in the forested mountains of Monchique, in the Algarve region, left 41 injured, one of them seriously and razed 27,000 hectares (66,700 acres) of vegetation. Dozens of homes were reduced to ashes.

In neighboring Spain, firefighters said they were close to putting out a fire that has burned for five days near Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast.
