WILLEMSTAD – Yesterday the Parliament of Curacao agreed with a motion to urge the government to install a multidisciplinary team that controls the labor situation here in Curacao. The intention of this motion is to prevent more people from becoming victims of labor abuse on our island.

The motion says: “In a public meeting of June 18, 2018. Considering that the implementation and control of labor laws is a primary task of the government of Curacao, it is still common that there are people who are likely to become victims of abuse and that this has an effect on the worker’s social and emotional life. The Employers have the obligation to comply with the laws and labor agreements to which said workers are entitled. This implies also that the worker also has his duties that they must complying with. In the government apparatus, there are public officials who have been waiting for several years for what they are entitled to. Among others, the legal position and the respective compensation that until now have not been received. It is decided to urge the government to start an information campaign about all rights and duties of workers. Urge the government to intensify as soon as possible the promotion of a line of claims that allows workers to report abuse at work. Urge the government follow-up on the rights of public officials so that they can receive what they are entitled to. Urge the government to install a multidisciplinary team consisting of SBAB, SVB and also the Department of Inspection and Labor that controls and directs the labor situation here in Curacao through a government decree.

The Motion was approved and signed by 14 parliamentarians of the political parties MAN (5), PAR (4), MFK (2), PIN (1) Pueblo Soberano (1), PIN (1).
