WILLEMSTAD.- The Minister of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning, Mrs. Zita Jesús Leíto, with astonishment, took note of different statements that appeared in the press regarding her person. These statements are about the possible implementation of the Uber system, which can be regarded as a modern taxi form here in Curaçao.

Uber is an American app, with which the user can arrange a transport from one end to another.

All persons who meet certain requirements can join Uber, and be transported with the Uber according to their request. Different countries such as the Netherlands, the United States, and Mexico have introduced the Uber system. In Curaçao, the government did NOT make the decision to implement and introduce the Uber system.

This development would affect the taxi drivers sector and would have a devastating effect on the taxi drivers’ financial income. On behalf of the Government, there is no decision or management to change the existing permit system.

The Minister’s thinking is that there are different technological developments worldwide that influence the tourism, telecommunications and transport sector. The fact is that these, little by little, will try to make their entrance in Curaçao. The examples are WhatsApp and Airbnb. For Curaçao and all those who work in the respective sectors, think forward and create methods where they can protect and / or adapt to this type of development.

Therefore, there is no decision on the part of the Government of Curaçao to introduce the Uber.
