A mudslide killed two people and damaged a family home in the Esposende area of northern Portugal following heavy rain, emergency services said Wednesday.

Large stones fell overnight on the home occupied by six people, killing a man and a 22-year-old woman, civil protection official Rui Costa told local media.

Other members of the family, “a couple and two children aged two and 12 were evacuated unharmed”, he added. Emergency services were waiting to secure the area before recovering the bodies, he said.

Heavy rain that has lashed northern Portugal “could have been the cause” of the mudslide but the theory “needs to be confirmed by experts”, Costa said.
