UTRECHT.- In a shooting incident in a tram at the 24 Oktoberplein on the Kanaleneiland district in Utrecht, several people were injured on Monday morning. The police take into account a terrorist motive. It is not yet known what the cause of the incident is. Witnesses say they have heard multiple shots. “A man started shooting wildly,” one witness reports.

 The perpetrator is currently still on the run. Ample area around 24 Oktoberplein has been largely closed off, reports the police. Three trauma helicopters were called in to provide assistance for the incident. The police cannot yet report the number of injured people or the nature of their injuries. Prime Minister Mark Rutte also aborted the weekly coalition meeting due to the situation in Utrecht. He will consult with a crisis team.  Rutte calls it “a worrying situation”. The police advised the Utrecht School organization organization SPO to keep the doors of schools closed. In Rotterdam the police are going to have extra supervision at stations and mosques in the city. Tram traffic was temporarily stopped due to the incident, but the trams are currently running again between Zuilenstein, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein.
