WILLEMSTAD – The Parliament member of the MAN party, Yaël Plet asked Minister Hensley Koeiman yesterday how the situation regarding the complaints and claims for labor abuse that are being generated on the island are going. “Currently under the Law, we must address all complaints and claims that are entering the Customer Service Department. Due to the difficult financial situation, the number of claims has risen. We have two Consultants to handle the claims.” This was stated by Minister Hensley Koeiman (Social Development, Labor and Welfare) during the deliberation with the parliament in a public meeting.

The Fraction MAN asked the Ministers of Public Health, Environment and Nature, Minister of Finance, Minister of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning and Minister of Social Development and Welfare to address the issue of labor abuse and social security.

According to Koeiman, the two people who currently attend to complaints of workplace abuse are not enough. For this reason, the government is working to find qualified people to help make the work more efficient.

Another question from Plat was the following: “What will happen with the complaints delivered and received and what is the strategy to eliminate the bad name that the Department of Labor has?” Koeiman explained that the Customer Service Consultants are working daily to mediate between the worker and the employer. “If this does not work, the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare will provide the claimants with a card to contact a Pro Deo lawyer so that these workers can obtain their rights.”
