WILLEMSTAD.- Finance Minister Kenneth Gijsbertha recently sent a letter to all the General Directors of the Ministries and also to the Sector Directors and the Directors of Management. This letter is related to the paralysis of the 2018 Christmas Parties. In his letter Gijsbertha wrote, that just like every year, this year different Ministries submitted their proposals related to the celebration of Christmas. Gijsbertha announced: “Due to the financial situation of our country, it is reported that public funds will not finance any celebration of Christmas.”

This also counts for all the celebrations that are regularly organized during the Christmas period. According to Gijsbertha, the celebrations of X-MAS and other celebrations can only take place in the same Ministries, but without the use of public funds. The services and organizations that have already submitted an order form, to finance their celebrations, will not get the requested approval. In the letter, Minister Gijsbertha refers to the Obligation to Stop Expenses that the Minister Council installed. As is known, the Government of Curaçao on July 27, immediately decided to reintroduce a call “Obligations Stoppage” for all the expenses that are made in the framework of the capital investment. The decision to impose a new Termination of Obligations takes place after on January 24, justly, the Government revoked the decision of November 15, 2017 to introduce this Stoppage of Obligations or Detention of Expenses. Said measure of Stoppage of Expenses, contains the prohibition of committing the Government in new obligations. In other words, you cannot spend more money and each instance should only use the amounts they have available on their own. In his letter, Gijsbertha informs all the directors that “our aspiration is that the” ordinary government services (Departments) “have a balanced budget.
