Bogotá, Colombia
The left-wing Colombian senator behind the historic conviction and subsequent house arrest of former right-wing president Alvaro Uribe told AFP on Wednesday that he had received numerous death threats.
Uribe, Colombia's president from 2002-2010, was sentenced to 12 years' house arrest on Friday after being convicted of attempting to bribe witnesses in an investigation into his links with paramilitaries.
The 73-year-old, who remains highly popular among Colombian conservatives and with the administration of US President Donald Trump, is the first former Colombian leader to be convicted of a crime.
Ivan Cepeda, who led the investigation into Uribe's ties with the paramilitaries before it went to court, said that he had received "almost daily" threats from Uribe supporters since Uribe's conviction.
He shrugged off the threats, which come at a time of rising tensions in Colombia, marked by the attempted assassination in June of right-wing presidential candidate Miguel Uribe (no relation to Alvaro Uribe).
"Justice was going to come to (Alvaro) Uribe sooner or later, because there are so many crimes, so many victims, so much ignominy," Cepeda told AFP.
As president, Uribe led a relentless, US-backed military campaign against drug cartels and the FARC guerrilla army.
He has been accused of having colluded with paramilitaries responsible for a slew of atrocities in the name of the anti-guerrilla fight.
Uribe was convicted of trying to bribe three former members of paramilitary groups into changing testimony they had provided to Cepeda about their alleged ties to the ex-leader.
He has until August 13 to appeal his conviction.
Cepeda is the son of a communist senator who was assassinated by paramilitaries in 1994.

I was volunteering for community events and sought digital ways to fundraise creatively. This encouraged me to find platforms that could tie into such efforts. I chose Frumzi Casino for its potential in small-scale engagements. Originating from down under in Australia, it has offers like welcome multipliers, weekly rebates, tournament pots, and charity-linked bonuses occasionally. Its Australian foundation ensures compliance with local standards and promotions that resonate with community spirit in Australia. It contributed positively to our event ideas.
