WILLEMSTAD.- "The economic situation is not good in Curaçao", says the chairman of the Financial Supervision Committee (Cft), Raymond Gradus yesterday during a press conference. "The economic activity of Curaçao in the last two years has decreased by 3.5%, and by 2019 the Government of Curaçao will experience a very small growth, like Cft, we realize that Curaçao has many challenges".
Related to the Curaçao budgets of recent years, Gradus explained the following: "The 2017 budget had a deficit of 116 million, and the 2018 budget experienced a deficit of 52 million guilders. At first, they thought that the budget wouldn’t rise above 39% but at the end of 2018 due to extraordinary obligations, the deficit reached 52 million.
For this reason, Cft is of the precise opinion, that Curaçao has to resolve the situation and balance the budget deficit of 2019 with a sum of at least 127 million. "We realize that this is a huge challenge, but the cardinal point is that, during different years, all government expenses are not satisfied with their entries, Curaçao cannot continue spending money that it does not have."
