WILLEMSTAD.- The country's financial situation is becoming a huge concern for institutes such as the Pension Fund, the APC and the Social Security Bank (SVB). As the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten have indicated in their publication at the end of 2018, the domestic debt of the country is growing again which is due to the growing debt of the government in APC and SVB. Since the first report of the Central Bank was published, EXTRA received information that the Government began to fall behind again with the payment of retained pension premiums corresponding to public officials. It is also not paying for the part of premium of the active officials that have been part of the fund since before 1998. Consequently, there is concern that APC is going to fall into trouble again, as was the case before the debt of the Netherlands Antilles was cleared. On the other hand, the Ministry of Finance is working very intensely on its compliance project, where it seeks to collect every penny it has on the street. Often it is the small and medium-sized merchants who suffer the most under these situations, since they do not have money to pay consultants who can deal with their tax documents. Large companies that owe a lot of money in taxes and social bonuses such as some hotels and aviation companies, close their doors or enter a process of postponing payment and never pay the amounts of taxes and social premiums withheld.
