WILLEMSTAD.- According to a study by the Department of Economic Development in 2015, InselAir contributed 5.7% to the National Gross Product of that year. In 2016 it was at 3.4% and in 2017 it was much less. Minister of Economic Development, Steven Martina said yesterday during a meeting of the Central Commission of the Parliament of Curaçao related to the issue of InselAir. According to Martina, in the 2017 figures it can be seen the great impacts that the problems that InselAir caused to our economy. Martina explained the reasons that led the government to grant InselAir a bail of 33 million guilders last year. Martina pointed out that the Government could not do otherwise due precisely to the impact that InselAir had on our economy.

Martina explained that in an SEO study it was calculated that if InselAir went bankrupt from one day to the other, this would have had a negative impact of at least the loss of 2,100 jobs. Martina: "Not only would the employees of InselAir lose their, but all the effects that it would have had on our economy that could have resulted in 2100 jobs lost." This means, that the bankruptcy of InselAir would correspond to the equivalent of 5 to 6 times the amount of 33 million guilders the Government then invested in InselAir.

Martina called on Parliament to balance things: "If we let InselAir go bankrupt, the economy of Curaçao will retreat from 150 to 160 million florins"
