Minister Camelia-Romer starts drainage project for Playa Canoa

Komparti:

WILLEMSTAD - Recently, the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Mrs. Suzanne Camelia-Romer, initiated an important project to drain the bay of the fishermen and thus ensure that fishermen can make maximum use of the beach and facilitate CITRO better when they must attend moments of eventual rescue on the north coast of Curaçao. Draining the pier is highly necessary, because the sea deposited and accumulated a large amount of sand over the bay in a course of time and this makes it very low sea for CITRO and fishermen boats.

The union of the fishermen’s of Playa Canoa is extremely satisfied with this project. In a shallow sea, the water heats up much faster which reduces the concentration of oxygen considerably and kills the fish that are entrapped by the fisherman.

This is a very unfortunate situation that at the same time leads to unnecessary losses of healthy food for the people. For CITRO it is also of the utmost importance that the pier is deep enough to lower its boats, since this is the only site north of the island, where the boats can anchor and arrive quickly in cases of rescue.

Minister Camelia Romer, who visited the bay in Playa Canoa in order to observe the work, explained that the financial situation of the Government is precarious, but working little by little and in phases we can execute important projects like this one. The Minister also showed that the possibilities must be studied for the GMN Ministry to obtain a permanent permit to shorten the time required to start similar projects. During the execution of the drainage works, the sea dock will look dirty, but it will only be temporary. Some days after the project is ready, the particles of the sand will be submerged to the bottom and the sea will be transformed into clean waters again as before.
