WILLEMSTAD.- ‘Aliansa’, the organization that represents 21 non-governmental organizations, with astonishment observed the vulgar and disrespectful expressions that a parliamentarian addressed a female colleague of the Parliament.
“This, once again, is proof that we are living in a culture in which, despite the belief that women have achieved everything and have absolute equality with men, unfortunately this is not the case.”
This expression is part of a structure of inequality in the treatment of women versus the treatment of men in our community. Women are judged, stained, ridiculed, slandered, offended personally and often the help of other women, among other reasons, to demonstrate the courage they have to enter the political arena.
The Community judges men much less than women because of what men say. The discussion is confined to the topic and issues of their personal life is not included in the discussion.
The image of women will not change as long as men do not change their way of seeing them, that is, as "sexual objects". These same women can be our mothers, our partner, sisters, daughters or aunts. And even though the community might think that these women are in good standing, the community still judges women as "sexual objects."
Therefore, Aliansa strongly condemns the expressions of the member of the Parliament but this also counts for expressions made anywhere, including the corners of each street.
Aliansa issues a call to both male and female parliamentarians who are in solidarity with the cause, to achieve real equality between the sexes and support the Alliansia in their effort to achieve and implement a National Plan to combat Domestic Violence and Abuse of the Children in which, any violent aspect against women and children is treated. Currently it seems that this National Plan is in the refrigerator. The organization demands a work environment without violence and intimidation against women, beginning with Parliament specifically and within our society in general.
Alliansa asks parliamentarians to show solidarity with women. More control in all those Institutes in which the Government grants subsidies for the care of our children and young people, based on their right to be well cared for. Alliansa demands more control in schools to detect possible pedophile acts and abuses of children, both from their representatives and from other senior citizens. Also more control over films and soap that are broadcast in cinemas, theater and television in which violence against women and children is encouraged. Finally, Aliansa demands more research regarding the phenomenon that has increased due to the economic crisis itself, in which more and more women and young people are entering prostitution.
