WILLEMSTAD.- “In our region we have serious problems because in the neighboring country the health system has collapsed, so whether we want it or not, we are very close to that country and we obviously get the effects and consequences of this.” This was stated by the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Suzy Camelia Romer. The Minister pointed out that the health situation in Venezuela is a matter of concern for the region.

Camelia-Romer recently found that the level of vaccination in Curaçao is between 80 and 90 percent. The Ministry has just begun with a campaign of information and awareness to ensure that all children who still did not have their mandatory vaccination to be vaccinated.

Camelia-Romer: “I am of the opinion that we should handle this situation as adults and ensure that children receive their correct vaccination.”

The fact that there are children in Curaçao who have not yet been vaccinated is the result of the worrying public health situation that is occurring in Venezuela.

Minister Camelia Romer: “We must take care of these children without much discussion, whether or not they are documented. All of them absolutely must receive their vaccination.”

Venezuela is experiencing a heavy political and economic crisis, which has generated, in turn, a serious humanitarian and health crisis. One of the aspects that is affecting Venezuela is the lack of enough medicines. Vaccines are not available on a large scale, so any outbreak of disease could be very serious for both the country of origin and neighboring countries. Moreover, the epidemics could also be transmitted to other countries. Nowadays it is also necessary to deal with the wave of undocumented and refugees, who can enter and stay in Curaçao or in other countries that carry and can transmit some diseases. All this according to information from the Pan American Health Organization PAHO.
