WILLEMSTAD.- On May 1st, the Common Court of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten, Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba celebrated 150 years. The official celebration of the 150 years of existence of the Common Court of the islands, took place yesterday May 3rd with a Symposium in the Auditorium of the University of Curaçao (UoC). The speakers during the Symposium were: the former chairpersons of the Common Court, Mrs. Mr. Lisbeth Hoefdraad and Prof. Mr. Jaime Saleh, who spoke about the developments that the Common Court experienced during the years when they exercised said functions.

Subsequently, the Vice-Dean of the order of lawyers in Aruba, Mr. Johan Sjiem Fat, spoke on “Why the books of VS Naipaul should be read” and the former Sint Maarten Prosecutor Mr. Dr. Nilda Ardiun also had a speech concerning the Constitutional Court of Sint Maarten. The keynote speaker was Prof. Marc Loth who staged “Seven life scenarios in 150 years of the Common Court”.

During the morning an exhibition was held at the Palace of Justice, before the Symposium that was held in the evening. In honor of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Court, the Art Commission presented an exhibition of the workers of the Common Court itself. Visitors to the Common Court from next May 6th, can appreciate the exhibition in the corridor of the Court located at Wilheminaplein.
