WILLEMSTAD.- “We have started from the beginning of April to build the barracks for the undocumented, larger. Because it is known that undocumented people are detained in a different way from those detained for punishable acts. The barracks were for an amount of 35 people which is very little, considering the flow that has been shown in recent years. ‘This was stated by Minister of Justice Quincy Girigorie during the press conference of the Council of Ministers. He explained that within the framework of the agreements with the Kingdom regarding how to deal with the undocumented, it was decided to fix the barracks for the undocumented.

According to Girigorie, ‘the final goal is that we reach a place that can allocate up to 100 people. The first phase will be completed in two weeks of next month. This first phase will create opportunities for 50 people. It includes “grouping” people and also in the future people can sleep in separate cells. According to the Minister of Justice in recent years there were lots of escapes because so many people together created a danger for the officials who work in the barracks themselves, and even for themselves. According to the Minister, with this reconstruction, more escapes from the barracks can be avoided. Subsequently, the locations were simply repaired with the famous 143.000 Euros from the Netherlands, in the table of their contribution. This phase cost Ang.600,000 in total, with the money that Curaçao also invested in it, Girigorie explained. ‘Much has been paid by Curaçao with the help and support of the Netherlands’.
