WILLEMSTAD.- During the opening of ‘Curaçao Pride 2018’ in Wilheminaplein, the LGBQT + FOKO organization, Curaçao Gay Pro and ‘Igualdad Korsou’, delivered a Bill to the member of Parliament mrs. Giselle Mc Williams. This project was delivered by the LGBQT + Community and by all the people who defend equality in Curaçao.

At the moment, a large group of our community does not have the right to marry whoever they want. This means that they have a partner and they love each other, but their love is not recognized by the law, while for other couples it is the case.

Mario Kleinmoedig said that this difference in the law presupposes that a relationship between people of the same sex has less value than a heterosexual relationship. There is no justification for this discriminatory treatment. “We have the same duties, we pay our taxes and the contribution of our social premiums. We must enjoy the same rights and benefits as any other citizens of our country.” People who are part of the LGBQT + community deserve that the laws of their country recognize their dignity. This relationship also deserves confirmation and protection and that our laws grant them the civil marriage.

Mario Kleimmoedig said that the goal of this bill is to end discriminatory treatment and make civil marriage available to people of the same sex. The moment the majority of Parliament approves this bill, it will be possible for two people of legal age and of the same sex to marry in a civil marriage, if they wish.

Marriage, as the law describes it, will only be established by the civilian marriage. Nothing will change by the time the law in question comes into force. This law will also not grant the right to members of the LGBQT + community to get married in the church. A religious marriage is and will always be a matter that each religious organization must decide, and the way they organize it in their respective organizations as well.

The LGBQT + Organization is aware that a part of Curaçao does not agree with same-sex marriage for people of the same sex. This often has discriminatory motives and homophobic opinions and a dis-indoctrination and recognition against the LGBTQ + community.

This is an injustice that must be remedied. Just as color and ethnicity, sexual orientation is not a choice. There is no valid reason to accept discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Although according to mr. Kleimoedig, they will give education so that there is more acceptance and tolerance towards the LGBTQ + community, you cannot keep waiting until everyone is convinced. It is about the recognition of equal dignity for all citizens of Curaçao. Every day that passes and this is not corrected, a great injustice is committed for our community.

The moment to recognize human dignity for each and every one of us is: “NOW”, concluded Mario Kleinmoedig.
