WILLEMSTAD.- Violence in schools continues to be a concern for teachers and also for the Sitek union. According to the chairman of the trade union, Mr. Darius “Lio” Plantijn, it shouldn’t be forgotten that at the end of 2014, the union submitted a draft Law both in Parliament and to the Government thus giving a contribution in the struggle. This project contains about 18 points to ensure safety in schools.

This project is almost ready. Some months back, Sitek had a meeting with the Minister of Education and all the School Directives to review this project, which does not need much to be converted into Law.

According to Plantijn, there were many questions about the financial aspect, in the sense of how much it will cost. If a school is going to be required to have its yard very well closed, its bathrooms with all the accessories it requires, the directors want to know what and how many funds they should have in the equivalent of money.

Regarding the financial aspect this bill is still endured. But it is expected that considering that the Government announced and showed that education has priority, it will be good to deal with this financial part in order to have the facility to guarantee security to the schools. Along with this, in the past there were awareness campaigns of the people to take care of the schools and watch over the behavior of others, so that in truth the school functions as a harmonious community where violence, aggression and disrespect are not accepted inside the school campus.

 CIVICS PROGRAM:

Along with all this, Sitek developed a whole civic program that was part of the celebration of the anniversary of Sitek, which was delivered to the Prime Minister in 2013; a complete document to promote citizenship. Sitek has people ready to work on methods that can be applied from Basic Education to University. It only requires a green light from the Government, for this to enter the schools. This complete plan has a part in which they will give information to the staff of the schools, so that their attitudes reflect the patriotism.
