WILLEMSTAD.- Infections by bacteria that make people sick are high in Curaçao. This is derived because it is possible to eat in places infected with bacteria that are generated from sales in supermarkets. A medical microbiologist noted that cases of infection are very frequent in people with salmonella, diphtheria and E.coli bacteria. Many people have bacteria in their blood, which is observed at the time of testing, as they are quite sick. Many also have bacteria that are extremely dangerous. Another point that stood out was that the ingestion of meat infected with these bacteria, which make people sick, could have its origin or reason why many people in Curaçao have problems in their intestines. All this was deduced yesterday, during the presentation of the investigation of meat that the Veterinary Service made in 20 supermarkets in Curaçao. Inge Drost is one of those who conducted the investigation. He researched labels, meat and hygiene in supermarkets. What he found is that they have a high degree of contamination of products in the meat of supermarkets. According to the head of the veterinary service, Arnold Dwarkasing, the result of the investigation was “right”. That is why it will try to implement a communication system, in which, it can help raise the quality to attend with the products of both supermarkets and butchers. In addition, he was surprised that there are so many problems that were detected in the investigation, which was not expected, he said. Dr. Dwarkasing explained that they attend to the supermarkets, where contamination was found and they will continue to perform the controls. Referring to the investigation of meat expired two years ago, he cannot guarantee, that this will continue happening in Curaçao. Many times after weekends, they run into people who come to the doctor’s office sick, and it turns out that they are contaminated with one of these bacteria, because they consumed infected meats. On the other hand, a supermarket owner who was present during the talk, asked to create an information program for the consumer, in order to teach them how they should deal with the meats they buy. They buy the meat and do not know how to handle it, and then they accuse the Supermarket alleging that the meat was damaged.
