WILLEMSTAD.-  – Officially Inselair has been declared bankrupt. This means that the company will cease to exist. But along with Inselair there are many remarks about the 33 million guilders that were invested in the company with the aim of blowing new air into it. Inselair went of “being bad to be worse” and as seems that the 33 million are chasing the Government, the fraction of MAN decided to ask to open an investigation on how the 33 million were spent, so that in this way the party can make themselves co-responsible, says Mr. Eugene Cleopa of the MAN faction during an interview with EXTRA yesterday.

According to Mr. Cleopa, at the time the loan of 33 million was agreed to invest in the company, he was a member of the party PAIS, which means that he did not participate in this decision in which the whole party agreed at the time, but that does not mean that the clarifications can’t be requested since the Government is a continuation.

According to Mr. Cleopa, as it is public funds since the Government was the guarantor of this, the MAN party will ask the Comptroller to conduct an investigation in this regard, to know how the money was spent. Mainly we want clarity to know how much these funds contributed to prolong the operation of the company, maintain job quotas and connectivity between the islands of the Kingdom. According to Mr. Cleopa, in this case, MAN wants to apply the principle of transparency for all people and know what money was spent in addition to knowing the responsibility in all this.

As it is known, after so many setbacks Inselair was not saved. In 2015, the company began to confront serious problems, which coincided with the economic malaise of Venezuela. Due to the situation in Venezuela, the number of tourists coming to Curaçao decreased, while the Management of that time, announced that they had around $ 100 million retained that the Government of Nicolas Maduro did not want to release, and this was what worsened the situation.

In 2016, a number of employees were withdrawn and a new Management of Canada was established, which also failed to change the direction. It was later tested with Mr. Juni Sluis, who after several months also announced his retirement. The last months Mr. De Brabander held the reins, but the efforts were in vain. Inter Caribbean Airways had high hopes for Inselair, but misunderstandings and after a war in the Court, forced them to withdraw their support. Inselair passed through the same as did ALM, DCA and DAE in the past.
